As much of Australia is experiencing a heatwave at the moment – sending many women out to brave the harsh lighting and mirrors of swimwear stores!! – I thought this might be the time to add some shapely swimwear images from Cosmopolitan magazine’s Australian edition to remind us that “bikini ready” comes in larger sizes!

Target released a fun commercial for US audiences in 2005 featuring Isaac Mizrahi and a mix of models of different sizes and ages to portray his “Luxury for Every Woman, Everywhere” design philosophy.  Clearly a winning technique, as Mizrahi used the same idea in a 2009 campaign with Liz Claiborne.

It may only be a once-a-week newspaper magazine insert, but UK News of the World’s Fabulous magazine issue #25 boldly goes where only a few have been before them…mixed model sizes on a cover, AND naked! Inside the issue was a poll of readers asking which woman’s body they felt was “the ‘perfect’ body”.  This [...]

Vogue US April 2007 “Shape Issue” featured Crystal Renn and Hilary Rhoda in an editorial mixing high- and low-priced sports and day wear. Normally I would not display Hilary’s photos as she is listed as a US size 4 in the text of her images… HOWEVER… It appears in this editorial that Hilary was styled [...]

From perhaps the late 1990s is this Spring booklet from retailer Holt Renfrew, which used to have quite a well-stocked plus-size designer section in all of its stores throughout Canada. Alas, these images now form something of an obituary as the section was ‘deleted’ when the stores underwent a nationwide makeover.

When Crystal Renn was chosen to front MANGO‘s Autumn 07/08 “Why Not?” campaign, Spanish newsmedia at Elmundo ran a story on her featuring the following images from a previous fashion story from sister magazine “Yo Dona”, issue #61 of June 2006.

EN VOGUE 1: OPPOSITES ATTRACT 2004

In April 2002, Vogue US released its first Shape Issue starring Kate Dillon as shot by Helmut Newton, with a short interview. It says something about how seriously Vogue took their first attempt at including larger models by enlisting a photographer as reknown as Newton; but it’s a shame that for the successive Shape Issues [...]

Simple and clean, curvy lines with no apologies, this 1997 editorial for Vogue UK stars Sarah Morrison, a model who was discovered by photographer Nick Knight. Reporting on a tribute evening hosted by Moët to celebrate Knight’s accomplishments in an article by The TimesOnline (UK), Lisa Armstrong writes: He almost certainly led the charge of [...]

MODE COVERS: 1997

The launch of MODE magazine was a watershed moment for the plus-size modeling industry, and in a lot of ways was the most determining factor in the industry’s growth for a 5 year period.  Designers took chances and created extended sizes or specific plus-size clothing lines, and the agencies found amazing faces topping even more [...]

GO WEST, KATE

It’s always refreshing to see normalized body shapes in fashion advertising – but especially when the retailer also offers clothing in both regular and extended sizing and advertises the fact as subtlely as this magazine image does.   Kate Dillon for Nine West Photographer: TBA
